The Rock County Communications Center is designed to provide the most efficient method for citizens to obtain fast, effective public safety services 24 hours a day throughout the year.

Welcome to the Rock County Communications Center website! The Rock County Communications Center is the only Public Safety Communications Center in the United States to have now started its fourth three-year accreditation by CALEA (Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies). Our Communications Center is the only CALEA accredited center in the state of Wisconsin and we have achieved the ranking of a CALEA "Flagship" agency. The Communications Center began operations in 1993 and stresses professionalism and continual training for its staff members.

About Us

The Communications Center provides 24-hour dispatching services for all law, fire and EMS agencies in Rock County. The Communications Center serves all of Rock County, consisting of a population of over 160,000 people spanning an area of 720 square miles. Telecommunicators perform various duties such as receiving emergency and non-emergency calls for public service via computerized E-911 equipment, dispatching appropriate resources utilizing a computer aided dispatch (CAD) system and automated mapping system, maintaining activity status records of resource units, providing emergency medical pre-arrival instructions, serving as an information resource to response units and the general public, operating radio transmitters in accordance with FCC rules and regulations, communicating by computer with mobile data computers and maintaining electronic data files. Telecommunicators regularly work an 8-½ hour shift on a 5/2, 5/3 schedule.

There are several advancement opportunities for telecommunicators within the Rock County Communications Center. With dedication, education and hard work, telecommunicators can advance to Communications Training Officers, Lead Telecommunicators, Telecommunicator Instructors and Supervisors. All telecommunicators are trained by APCO certified agency instructors in Basic Telecommunicator and Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) courses during the initial stages of employment. Continued professional training takes place throughout the year due to the constant changes in public safety policies and procedures.

Qualified applicants must be able to type 40 net words per minute. The selection process includes computer keyboard testing, computer exam, interview, psychological, physical, drug screening, and background investigation.
