Download a PDF Version of this PosterSince 1985, America has celebrated July as the nation’s official Park and Recreation Month. This year's theme: "Out is In!" Make this month the time you spend outdoors having fun at your community parks, and enjoy what nature has to offer. Here's a short list of fun activities you can do at local parks: hike, bike, fish, swim, bird watch, run, play on playgrounds, plant identification, disc golf, boating, wildlife and scenic viewing, volleyball, baseball, softball, kickball, have a picnic or volunteer!

Start setting trends instead of following them. Make 2014 the year you go outside, change your outlook, and get involved in your community through parks and recreation. This July, show us how Out is In by visiting one of your many community parks.

The Rock County Parks Department received a National Park and Recreation Association Take me Fishing grant in 2010, which allows us offer fishing and boating education programs for local schools and youth groups.

Why fishing education? Water is one of the main features in Rock County Parks - thirteen parks have water access on seven different bodies of water. The system includes several canoe landings, boat launches, and fishing piers; so fishing is one of the main ways to recreate in the park system. Rock County Parks believes that it is important for youth and families to get outside and explore nature while staying close to home. The best way to encourage families to do this is by providing them the opportunity to give it a try.

If you are a scout or youth group leader, teacher, or event organizer interested in this free program, please contact the Community Coordinator at 608-757-5473 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Park Fees

Shelter reservations for family reunions, graduation parties, weddings, or group picnics are made by contacting the Rock County Parks Department.  Reservations must be made if you plan to use electricity.  If the shelter is not reserved, it is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.  Rentals always take precedent over drop-in users.  Please remember that certain sites and dates fill up fast.  Reservations for group picnic area and shelters are first accepted after 7:00 AM on the first business day of the calendar year.

A boat launch permit is required at all County boat launches from April 15 to October 31.  All users must purchase a single day or seasonal Rock County launch pass.  Registration materials are available on site.

Rock River Water Trail

Pier

For the past year, the Rock County Parks Community Coordinator has been a part of the Rock River Trail Initiative Council.  The Council's mission is to establish and interpret a Rock River Water Trail along the 300-mile river course from the headwaters in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, to the Mississippi River at Rock Island, Illinois, and a separate Rock River Route on roads within the river corridor to provide access for all to the natural resources, recreational opportunities, scenic beauty and historic and cultural assets of the Rock River Valley.

The Council recently completed an inventory of all Rock River access points in Wisconsin and Illinois and wrote a water trail plan that will be presented to the National Park Service at the end of the year for consideration to become National Scenic Riverway.
