Services and Functions provided by the District Attorney’s Office

Chapter 978 of the Wisconsin Statutes establishes the County Office of the District Attorney. The office is tasked with representing the People of the State of Wisconsin and Rock County in court proceedings. The District Attorney and his staff prosecute state criminal matters, forfeiture actions, state and county traffic code and ordinance violations, Department of Natural Resources violations, juvenile, domestic abuse, and harassment cases. Additionally, the District Attorney operates the Victim/Witness Program which provides support to victims and witnesses of crime.

The Presumption of Innocence

A formal criminal charge against a person, whether contained in a criminal complaint or an information, constitutes only the legal allegation of criminal conduct. In the United States, an accused person is presumed to be innocent of any alleged crime unless a judge or jury finds them guilty in a court of law. Reporting a Crime
