Home MenuRespiratory Virus Season
The respiratory virus season is generally defined as the time of year when respiratory infections are most prevalent, typically taking place from September through February.
Each week during respiratory virus season, we provide an updated summary of current trends in caseloads along with simple prevention strategies to keep you from getting sick. These weekly updates are posted to this webpage, to our social media platforms, and to our Healthy Rock dashboard.
While there are many respiratory viruses that affect us each year, three specific viruses are considered reportable in cases where they lead to hospitalization and/or a pediatric death: COVID-19, influenza (flu), and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
Because certain cases of these three viruses have to be reported, it is easier to directly track and predict trends in caseloads for these viruses. However, other common respiratory viruses, like adenoviruses and rhinoviruses, often follow a similar trend and their caseloads can therefore be estimated based on trends in reportable viruses.
Core Prevention Strategies
Respiratory viruses are responsible for millions of illnesses each year in the United States. You can help protect yourself and others from getting sick by following core prevention strategies from the CDC, including:
- Staying up to date with recommended immunizations.
- Practicing good hygiene like washing your hands regularly.
- Taking steps for cleaner air.
- Using precautions to prevent spread to others like staying home when ill.
- Seeking health care promptly for treatment if you have risk factors for severe illness.
