Move Over Slow Down – It’s The Law in Wisconsin

The Rock County Highway Department and the Sheriff's Office would like to remind drivers to Move Over Slow Down for emergency responders and roadside workers.

Wisconsin's Move Over Law (346.072) requires drivers to move out of the lane closest to stopped law enforcement vehicles, ambulances, fire trucks, tow trucks, and utility or highway maintenance vehicles that have their warning lights activated. If unable to move over, drivers must slow down. Violations can result in a citation of $263.

Our law enforcement officers and highway workers are often outside of their vehicles conducting routine traffic stops, helping stranded motorists, and working on road improvement projects. We want all of our Rock County employees to get home safely. We are asking all drivers to be alert and move over or slow down. It's up to all of us to keep our roadside workers safe.
